Although Ubuntu is a relatively young Linux kernel based build; it started in late 2004 and it accounts for approximately 30% of all Linux installations. It is free, open-source, and it comes in over 55 languages. While this operating system allows freelance developers to improve it without paying anything, the trained technicians at Ubuntu Foundation provide paid support for paying customers. Being one commercially supported Linux OS, one can see why it’s such a profitable business to maintain it with all of the users all over the world running desktops at home, in the office, as well as data centers running Ubuntu dedicated servers.
Ubuntu means humanity in Zulu, and the Foundation’s goal is to provide a stable, usable OS to an average Joe. Owned by South African businessman Mark Shuttleworth, his company, Canonical Ltd, has many Ubuntu-based sub-projects. These include Edubuntu for schools, Kubuntu and Xubuntu as desktop-based GUI builds, and many more. Every six months, a new Ubuntu version comes out with newer updates and features. Tesco and Dell are some of the companies that provide Ubuntu pre-installed on certain lines of their computers.
Ubuntu dedicated servers come installed with PHP, MySQL and Python as part of this Linux-based build. ManageMyServices technicians support all three of those as part of technical assistance that comes with every product we sell. One advantage of a home-based or an office-based Ubuntu installation is that it can be run from a flash drive, without a hard drive. Another unique feature of this operating system is that it can be installed within an environment called Live CD which lets you try out Ubuntu before fully setting it up.
