FreeBSD is an open-source Unix-like operating system designed specifically for web-servers. It runs on AMD64 processors, as well as PowerPC, DEC Alpha, SUN machines, and many more. Although not officially recognized to be a Unix OS, it is a lot like Unix because of its internal API’s and other components being similar. Unlike Linux, FreeBSD comes with its kernel, drivers, shell, and all other parts pre-installed; in Linux, those come separately.
In 1993, the first version of FreeBSD was developed, and later maintained by a small community of 386 BSD users. A lawsuit from copyright owners of Unix ended up forcing the developers to rewrite most of FreeBSD, because it was too similar to Unix, and thus violated copyright laws. By 1996, after years of development and modifications, Yahoo and Hotmail were running on this OS. 12 years later, FreeBSD dedicated servers remain to be the preferred configuration for many users still today.
Just about any made-for-Linux code will run just as well on FreeBSD, despite the differences mentioned in the beginning. A compatibility layer may be needed for some software, however, because the two aren’t exactly the same. Certain commercial applications made for Linux may be run of FreeBSD in binary, such as Skype, Firefox, Adobe Acrobat, WordPerfect, Oracle, RealPlayer, and more. All of these are included in a package of software called StarOffice, which also comes with Mathematica, Matlab, Quake 4 and Doom 3.
FreeBSD is not solely free; it is distributed under multiple licenses. Therefore, not all parts of FreeBSD can be developed, copied, and distributed freely. The board of directors of the FreeBSD project are re-elected every 2 years, and these newly-appointed members of the programming community are responsible for expanding the operating system. ManageMyServices carefully follows the developments in Linux and Unix-like operating systems to keep our FreeBSD dedicated servers stable and affordable.
The disadvantages of FreeBSD are that the hosting control panels such as Cpanel/WHM, PLESK and DirectAdmin have more problems working with the operating system and it is more difficult to administer than a standard Linux distribution like CentOS or Fedora so we recommend prior-expertise in FreeBSD before ordering a FreeBSD dedicated server.
